Trip to Cocos Island-
The Treasure Island
|
 In
the Eastern Tropical Pacific, 300 miles southwest of
Cabo Blanco, Costa Rica, is the famous marine park Cocos
located, a rugged and incredibly beautiful island. This
world Heritage Site is the crown jewel of Costa Rica’s
many different national parks. Cocos Island with
its irregular coastline is roughly measured 5 miles
long by a wide of 2 miles (8km x 3 km).
This
fascinating island was formed during a volcanic upheaval
around 2.5 million years ago and is composed from lava
flows of basaltic rocks, labacorite and andecite. Its
landmass is made up of four mountain peaks, of which the
highest is Cerro Yglesias with a height of 2,080 feet
(634m).
The island has two large bays with safe anchorages
and sandy
 beaches. Chatham is situated on the
northeast side and Wafer is located in the northwest
of the island. Around Cocos Island are a series of
smaller, basaltic, satellite
rocks and islets
located, with the largest one being the Isla
Manuelita, formerly known as Isla Nuez.
